"NOMADIC COMMUNITY GARDEN" (c. 05-2014 ~)
FLEET STREET HILL, SHOREDITCH, LONDON, E1  ... in process
[
written 10-2018 ~ ##]

The " Nomadic Community Garden" occupies a 'difficult-to-profitably-develop' plot of land in one of London's strongly beating social 'hearts' (Shoreditch). It occupies a portion of a triangle - from its pointed end for 120 widening meters - that is almost completely enclosed by two sets of rail-lines that converge on its west point. In the Garden's 54m transverse east boundary is its vehicle-access, via the access-road of a housing estate that fills the triangle's remaining 275 meter broadening east part. From this road (Pedley Street) a narrow path to the west squeezes between the Garden's southern fence and the railway's concrete wall, rising towards its dramatic leap across its older cousin-lines at the triangle's western point. Here the Garden's pedestrian entrance is located and the narrow path dives south under the bridging railway into a bald public-park and an alley to Brick Lane.

In 20## [ref GOO PIC 09-2014 of 1st(??) huge east-end 'mural' on a cleared site]  this abandoned triangle was appropriated and cleared by 'squatters' and (with usage permission from its owner-Developers) has since been continually elaborated.

The " Nomadic Community Garden" is a hub of relatively free activities; a concentrated, bounded, enclosed 'experimental-yard' whose particular creative freedoms (mainly wall-painting) nevertheless engage with and spread into its immediate surroundings. Its existence in a crowded city - in which everything is 'normally' owned, sold, or provided within severe behavioral/usage restrictions by public authorities - is justified (and might become recognised as socially essential) via its role of sustaining a place whose behavioral restrictions are somewhat more associated with 'home' than public-places (parks/streets/buildings). An environment that 1, can be freely used, added-to, and changed by any individual who wishes to perform and publically share personal creative experiments; 2, which gifts small garden box-plots (approx 2m cubed boxes) to surrounding flat dwellers to grow (usually) vegetables; 3, which provides semi-organised tutoring in crafts and (overtly or implicitly) in social tolerance.

We very rarely (at least in this culture) have an opportunity to experience environments that have no sudden boundary between chance (eg "rubbish" &/or objects and materials simply 'behaving themselves' ... not 'in use') and intentional constructions: architecture, buildings, art-objects, paintings, furniture, paths, relaxing places and leisure facilities ... there is so rarely a continuum between these 'normally' completely different/kept-separated  types of objects, arrangements, formations. Cleanness / hygiene / aesthetic purity / clarity of intention and use / etc., demand that our artificial made environments are clearly functional, confined to our uses, unmuddled by the untrammelled 'behaviour of the world'.

I first visited the N-C-Garden in March 2018.

People entries:

1: From Allen Gardens (a large flat grass field to the east of Brick Lane and south of the Overground train lines) walk to the SW-gate: pass under the railway through the huge graffitied opening in the north wall of Allen Gardens and the Community Gardens gate faces you across the W end of the long graffitied path that flanks its S side.

2: At the SE corner of the Community Gardens - at the E end of the long graffitied path that flanks its S side - there is a vehicle gate that is sometimes open. For the intrepid this graffitied E end (called Fleet Street Hill) can also be reached from the north - over the main railway lines via the graffitied Pedley Street Bridge, accessed via an alley off 72 Cheshire Street.

APPROACH & ENTRY TO THE N-C-GARDEN AT ITS WEST END     ... in process

Southeast of the intense social activity around Shoreditch High Street station and the north end of Brick Lane there is a rather dismal poplar-fringed field called Allen Gardens, bounded along its north side by the wall of the rising Overground railway. Through this massive barrier there is a large opening

'AREA 1' - THE WEST END OPEN-SPACE AREA OF THE N-C-GARDEN SITE     ... in process

Area-1 is at the pointed end of the triangular site - which for approx 36m is too narrow to conveniently accommodate structures in its centre, it has thus become an entry-courtyard-like space edged with, on its N-side, sit-places along the graffitied boundary wall, and on its S-side with larger structures and their associated services: from the site's entry-gate; past an 'introductory' gift-store; past a quite complex cafe; and finally a childrens' play place with a grounded boat. By then the site is becoming broad enough to accommodate central structures as well as peripheral paths and a continuation of facilities along the site's edges.

In this environment of visual primacy where objects' functions tend to be obscured under a plethora of frequently changing visual relatings; where we are relatively freed from recognising and separating objects by their use - the co-incidence of the bent sleeved-arm and bent smoke-flu (holding in tension the picture between them and simultaneously demonstrating the function of creasing) is a 'normal-awareness' observation.

(paste-up 2-pics 27-10-2018 / to SSW)

Here we are standing within the start of 'Area-2' - the first portion of the triangular site where increasing width allows development of structures at its centre in addition to its edges - looking across at the boat-play-place, the last in the row of three uniquely functional installations strung along the S-side of Area-1, from the site's entry: the 'gift-exchange' hut, the cafe, and this  boat-playground. This central sit-place - located directly behind the large info-notice board that signals the east limit of Area-1 [see below] - seems to have grown in phase with the boat play-place - it shares its decorative style and in particular its large colour-striped timber 'spatial-demarcation' blocks.
.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1): N-SIDE - THE NORTH WALL & VARIOUS SIT PLACES
(pic 29-04-2018 / to WWN)

Opposite the cafe and boat, the north side of 'Area-1' is barriered with a long wall (that screens the Garden from the main rail lines to Liverpool Street). In spite of representing a huge effort of painting, the graffiti decor on this whole long wall has been changed (at least) three times in 2018.

All the way along from the site's west entry, any structures with definite useful functions (gift-exchange hut, cafe, boat-playground) have been built and established along the site's south boundary fence. For some reason the north side (perhaps because it was so immediately attractive to graffitists) has hosted a muddle of small-scale installations: sit-places with tables, small objects of useful function (litter-bins; notices; a cash-box; plant-containers), and small objects of no practical function ('art').
.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1): N-SIDE - THE NORTH WALL
(pic 11-05-2018 / to NE)

The painting is changing again - a more assertive (but graffitiesquely more conventional) character has painted over the "Welcome To" portion of the previous message.

Here a socially-shared sitting place has clarified-out of a more tenuous//provisional version [ref the previous pic - 7 months earlier] that is not yet finally demarcated//separated from a loose muddle of objects and functions. This is how potentials are both realised and simultaneously pruned, lost, simplified.
.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1): N-SIDE - THE NORTH WALL'S E-END SIT PLACE
(pic 02-03-2019 / to NE)

During last 4 months the seats and tables that backed onto the wall (plus probably other items now in the foreground) were moved into rather haphazard positions onto the fronting path. The other two seats and two tables have retained their positions. Presumably the changes (plus the removal of a bush) cleared work-space for the ambitious new wall paintings.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1): E-END INFO NOTICE
(pic 25-03-2018 / to E)

The east-end of the site's 'entry-plaza' (my 'Area 1') is signalled by a notice-board that conveys information on the N-C-Garden's history.

This notice-board is the first central structure accommodated by the widening of the triangular N-C-Garden site towards the east - the structures and facilities that occupy the centre of the N-C-Garden through Areas 2, 3, 4, extend from the group of wooden-box planters and seating that back onto this notice.
.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1): E-END INFO NOTICES
(pic 28-09-2018 / to EES)

During the ensuing 6 months [ref previous pic] this notice board has acquired two new messages -  (revealing this loose community's broad tolerance of personality types and individually motivated actions) - a sentimental commercial icon of a teen-girl-guitarist asserting the ultimate profundity of "Me" and an astonishingly undecipherable 'instructional' notice opportunistically screwed to the board's frame
.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-1): E-END INFO NOTICES
(pic 22-02-2019 / to EES)

During the ensuing 5 months [ref previous pic] the undecipherable 'instructional' litter-notice has been replaced by a wooden waste-bin sporting a wooden illustration of a cute little kitsch fence (probably a retrieved litter-object that has at last found its ironic status).

'AREA 2' - THE FIRST OF THREE 'AREAS' WITH CENTRAL BUILDINGS    ... in process

The widening of the triangular site towards the east is now sufficient to accommodate free-standing placements in the centre of the site as well as on both sides. This has initiated a new proliferation of structures - from now on in the site is densely filled with sit-places, garden-plots, improvised/art-objects, and especially invented buildings fulfilling manifold functions.

The central development starts in 'Area-2' with groups of plant-boxes and sitting-places, beginning behind the large info-board at the east end of Area-1, and expanding to include the two sides: the north-path and the south-driveway (the latter edged with large collections of boxed allotments (loaned to the local flat-dwellers). Finally Area-2 hosts the site's first (most westerly) buildings, on the north side (adjoining the north-path) a caravan submerged under wooden-cladding and accreted structural extensions, used as an 'events centre and kitchen'{???} and on the south-side an agglomerated building housing a barbecue and providing sheltered social sitting places facing onto the south driveway.

N-C-GARDEN (AREA-2): NW CORNER OF CENTRE SIT-PLACE - VEHICLE TYRE SCULPTURE
(pic 25-03-2018 / W)

In early 2018 this figure was the 'guardian' of the most traveled pathway into 'Area-2'. (By 5th April the sculpture had been moved close to the N-wall; by May 1st it had been removed.)

The erratic scatter of sitting-places, plantings and sculptural objects along the north-edge of Area-1, that vaguely face across its open space towards its cafe, boat play-place and site entry, continues along the north edge of Area-2, however here they are more definitively inventive, useful and oriented than those in Area-1. In Area-2 they fringe a well-used path running between its N-boundary and its central building complexes, which serves as a defined route from the site's entry to its main communal gathering place, the east-end 'Area-5' 'plaza'.

One of the basic and fascinating aspects of this environment is that every object is very easily perceived as having the same status as every other - every thing becomes simply a form and tends to loose its comparative status in terms of qualitative meanings, value, usefulness, attractiveness, beauty. Thus the visual similarities and visual differences of things become more important than their functionality and value. A fascinating world of seeing from large to tiny. A plethora of decisions of all types but all equally communicative..

'AREA 3' - THE SECOND OF THREE 'AREAS' WITH CENTRAL BUILDINGS     ... in process

Separated from 'Area-2' by the first of three north-to-south walkways, what I call 'Area-3' includes two elaborate building agglomerations. The north building-group has two main components - adjoining the north-pathway are four self-contained chemical toilets, backing them to the south is a substantial single-volume studio/headquarters/storage space for graffiti-painters. The south side of 'Area-2' is a partially (structurally and functionally) resolved, sometimes semi-roofed, area that proclaims itself 'The Workshop', a 'Butterfly Village', a flower-growing area.

This east-to-west centre-path bisects the whole site, separating north and south buildings. Though, as it leaves 'Area-3' and traverses 'Area-4' it kinks, narrows, and is partly roofed, it is nevertheless a continuous route from the open entry-space of 'Area-1'', all the way to its east-end communal space of 'Area-5'.

LEAVING THE N-C-GARDEN VIA ITS E END

Though the N-C- Garden is an autonomous entity - discovered and conceptually initiated by an individual(??) and organised, built and 'furnished', by a co-operating group - it passively influences and extends 'creative permission' into its immediate surroundings, which (partly because they are only sparsely used by the 'general public') are continuous in terms of graffitied decoration with the densely painted N-C-Garden. Because of this I have bracketed my recording of the Garden itself with recordings of the two branching routes that lead to/from it.

It is also possible to access the N-C-Garden from the NE. Next to 72 Cheshire Street is the yard-entry to the (graffitied) Pedley Street Bridge, over the main railway (which fringes the N-C-Garden's north side) to the south . Descend from the bridge onto Fleet Street Hill and walk through a densely graffitied, probably 19thC tunnel to its south end at Pedley Street. Here, at the N-C-Garden's SE corner is its vehicle-entry-gate which is sometimes open. If this is closed turn right along the path between the Garden's S-side fence and the (continuously graffitied) concrete wall of the elevated railway, at its far end you will discover the Garden's SW entry gate. [ref above: 'Approach & entry to the west end']
